- Science Club’s Fun Friday Fact! Why was the DNA mad at the nucleosome? Because he didn’t like histone! A nucleosome is a section of DNA that is wrapped around a core of proteins. The proteins are known as histones, which act as structural support for the chromosome. DNA wraps around the histones and forms the nucleosomes, which condense and form chromatin fibers. Chromatin is a complex of DNA and proteins, the histones, and it condenses to make up chromosomes. Chromosomes are a structure that is found in the nucleus of cells, and they store the genetic material necessary for function. Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes, to total 46 chromosomes, but different animals and plants have varying amounts of chromosomes. Chromosomes even determine your biological sex! Females have XX chromosomes, while males have XY chromosomes. Thank you for tuning into Fun Fact Friday with Science Club!
Have a wonderful weekend!

- Thoughtful Thursday, a segment to be better with Bee. For today’s thought, do you ever think about how many electronics you have running at the same time? Studies show that not just turning off, but unplugging your electronics could save 10% of energy used each month. Now how does this help? Using electricity for electronics is one of the largest sources of green house gasses that harm our environment. If you make it a habit of unplugging unused items, you’ll be using less energy, which means less greenhouse gasses. Make sure to consider this when you are sitting around your house surrounded by plugs.

World Down Syndrome Day, which is Tuesday, 3/21, is an annual, global awareness day advocating for the rights, inclusion, and well-being of individuals who have Down Syndrome! These girls include Isabelle Mitrano (11th), Elizabeth DeHond (10th), Giana Cimineri (9th), Gwen Zawacki (11th). Along with 22 other schools and 119 athletes from around Section V, these students discussed topics on race relations, social justice and inclusion through activities and conversations guided by the national RISE to win organization. The girls’ participation and insights were a great representation of Mercy. Isabelle participates in soccer, basketball, and softball here at mercy. Gianna takes part in lacrosse and mercy cheerleading.
- Gwen Zawaki participates in Cross Country and as well Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field. She is in various clubs which includes Green Team, NHS, CMB, and more. Gwen as well was nominated a second time this week by Mrs. Barbero for being an exceptional leader and all-around wonderful Mercy Student. Elizabeth DeHond is a part of the Mercy Soccer team and as well has been a part of the Mercy track and field team. Elizabeth is a great leader on and off the field. She exemplifies strong female leadership All of the girls learned what it means to be anti-racist and what actions can be taken to promote a diverse environment, along with recognizing the different aspects of each person’s identity (such as being an athlete, sister, risk-taker). Congratulations to these 4 awesome young women who are showing leadership in the community and in their sports. All the girls found the training very beneficial and eye-opening. Each shared different thoughts on the training itself and all feel very prepared to become the future leaders we know they will be!

- Hi everyone, I’m Isabella Betzenhauser and I am a Senior. In collaboration with Mrs. Good’s period 6L speech class I am starting up a leadership highlight program here at Mercy. Every Tuesday we will be showcasing one student who has demonstrated extraordinary leadership. Staff will be on the lookout for girls who are great leaders inside or outside of these walls. Students are also able to nominate themselves. Each person nominated will be reviewed and one will be chosen to be the highlight that week and be interviewed by a member of the Speech class. Then they will showcase it right here on Mercy tv. For staff members to nominate a student or to nominate yourself, send an email to Isabella Betzenhauser and Mrs. Good. We can’t wait to hear about all the leadership Mercy students are demonstrating and we will see you next Tuesday for the first one!
- And here is Janiah Washington… As we end Black History month, let’s reflect on the words of Amanda Gorman, youth poet laureate, with an excerpt from her poem “The Hill We Climb”“…“…But while democracy can be periodically delayed, it can never be permanently defeated. In this truth, in this faith we trust, for while we have our eyes on the future, history has its eyes on us. This is the era of just redemption. We feared at its inception. We did not feel prepared to be the heirs of such a terrifying hour. But within it we found the power to author a new chapter, to offer hope and laughter to ourselves. So, while once we asked, how could we possibly prevail over catastrophe, now we assert, how could catastrophe possibly prevail over us? We will not march back to what was, but move to what shall be: a country that is bruised but whole, benevolent but bold, fierce and free. We will not be turned around or interrupted by intimidation because we know our inaction and inertia will be the inheritance of the next generation, become the future. Our blunders become their burdens. But one thing is certain. If we merge mercy with might, and might with right, then love becomes our legacy and change our children’s birthright. So let us leave behind a country better than the one we were left. Every breath from my bronze-pounded chest, we will raise this wounded world into a wondrous one. We will rise from the golden hills of the West. We will rise from the windswept Northeast where our forefathers first realized revolution. We will rise from the lake-rimmed cities of the Midwestern states. We will rise from the sun-baked South. We will rebuild, reconcile, and recover. And every known nook of our nation and every corner called our country, our people diverse and beautiful, will emerge battered and beautiful. When day comes, we step out of the shade of flame and unafraid. The new dawn balloons as we free it. For there is always light, if only we’re brave enough to see it. If only we’re brave enough to be it.

- Bee with Thoughtful Thursday….a segment to be better with bee,
- For today’s thought, do you wonder why some people want you to eat less meat? Meat—particularly beef—affects climate change in two ways: first, cows emit methane, a greenhouse gas, and second, many forests are destroyed so they can be converted to grazing fields. Modeling studies find that eating 20% less beef could cut in half the amount of deforestation and the carbon emissions with it by the year 2050. Maybe you can commit to skipping out on eating beef a few extra times this month to help lower these factors. Have a great day, Mercy!
- In honor of Black History Month, today’s Black inventor is Alexander Miles. He was a businessman who created automatic opening and closing doors. I know we have all seen the movies where the actor has to get on the elevator and close the metal gate before they can go up. Now, because of Miles that’s no longer needed. It was said that he sought out to create a safer way to ride the elevator. He was riding with his daughter when an attendant carelessly left the gate ajar. He knew at this moment something had to be done. Next time you get on an elevator thank Miles for your safe ride.

- On February 6, 2023 a 7.8 magnitude earthquake devastated large areas of Turkey and Syria. Many people have been affected by this and sadly more than 33,000 people have lost their lives. Affected areas in both countries, apartment buildings and schools have been destroyed. Search and rescue teams were able to recover many people trapped under the rubble in several Turkish cities, but hopes of finding more survivors are receding, while the Civil Defense in northern Syria announced the end of rescue operations. For Syrians, the damage has been taken in areas already destroyed by years of wars. We would like to spread awareness and provide the help that we can do. There will be a dress down for at least $1 this Thursday and if you would like to bring more money that would help us to donate and help our brothers and sisters who need our help. Your help is really important because this will provide shelter, access to food, water, and clothing.
- And now for Wednesday Weather…Today we will be discussing Garrett Morgan, the man who invented the traffic signal as well as the gas mask. The gas masks’ reason for creation comes from tragedy. There were multiple incidents that occurred that didn’t have the proper equipment examples being the explosion at the Cleveland waterworks tunnel and the fire at New York’s Triangle Shirtwaist Company. Over 190 people were killed during these tragedies. Morgan set out to create an effective mask and did just that! Although these aren’t used in most people’s day to day life they are essential to save lives for people like firefighters!

Today, I will be speaking about George Crum. George Crum was a renowned African American chef who worked at Moon’s Lake House in Saratoga Springs, New York. According to the popular legend, the potato chip was said to be created because of a picky customer. It was said that the customer complained about the fries being too thick, so Crum decided to slice a batch of potatoes paper thin, fry them to a crisp, and season them with salt. The customer loved them. After this they became a menu item for all to enjoy. Isn’t it crazy to think that potato chips wouldn’t have been invented if it wasn’t for one picky customer? Could you imagine sitting down at lunch without having your Lays chips? I know I couldn’t!

- And now for Fun Fact Friday with the Science Club from Katherine Elizabeth Longuil. If you remember from last week we talked about sound, so here we are, staying tuned in and talking about the speed of sound. Pachoooooooooooooosh. The speed of sound depends on the temperature of the medium it travels through, dictating particle movement and quantity. Typically, sound travels the slowest in gasses, faster in liquids, and fastest in solids because the particles become more stable as they change states of matter. There is always something faster than that speed, however, and that is called a Mach speed. The slowest Mach speed is Mach 1 and Mach 5 is the fastest (this is also known as hypersonic) sonic the hedgehog anyone? Objects that have been known to break the speed of sound are whips and jets, with military jets like the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird being able to reach speeds of Mach 3.3. When something breaks the speed of sound, it is called a sonic boom, and the largest sonic boom to have ever been made was the eruption of the Indonesian island of Krakatoa, heard all the way in Australia as loud artillery, traveling the world multiple times causing changes in atmospheric pressure. BOOOOOOOM goes the dynamite.

- And now for Fun Fact Friday with the Science Club! First, some history. During the late 16th to early 17th centuries, Galileo Galilei introduced the modern study of waves and acoustics. His studies elevated to the level of science the study of vibrations and the correlation between pitch and frequency of the sound source. Sound travels through particles, bouncing off vibrations and traveling from one particle to the other. Its volume (or how loud it is) is measured in bels. We can hear sounds because our ears vibrate in a similar way to the original source of the vibration. If our ears cannot vibrate in the correct way, people are known as deaf, because they cannot hear. Your eardrums measure these vibrations. Knowing this, it can be determined that the reason you can’t hear anything in space is because it is a vacuum, an area of empty matter. Contrarily to space, sound can travel up to four times as fast in water as it does in air because there are more particles. If you are looking to hear sound faster than you would in water, look to metals, because sound travels almost 15 times as fast in metals as it does in air.

- Good morning mercy! This is Bee Reilly back with thoughtful Thursday! A segment to be better with Bee! Today we are supporting Catherine Academy which is sadly being affected by Hurricane Lisa. The effects of these awful hurricanes can actually be traced back to global warming. As global warming increases, hurricanes become more severe. Winds become stronger; rainfall becomes stronger. We can’t control hurricanes, but we can help by doing things like donating our two dollars or doing daily tasks that help lower our carbon footprint. Did you know that the Sisters of Mercy have an action plan to address climate change? The first step is to reduce plastic use through all of their schools and institutions, so make sure you have a reusable water bottle! Any small change you can make to Bee Better is awesome! Keep it up Mercy!

- Red Ribbon Week: Drugs aren’t good for anyone, but they are particularly bad for kids and teens whose bodies are still growing. While using drugs, people are also less able to do well in school, sports, and other activities. It’s often harder to think clearly and make good decisions. People can do dangerous things that could hurt them or other people when they use drugs. Make good choices by celebrating the life you live! Tomorrow, wear your Mercy Spirit shirts with your uniform bottoms!

- It is important to understand that drugs don’t solve problems. You can become addicted from just one try. Also, using drugs often causes other problems on top of the problems the person had in the first place. Somebody who uses drugs can become dependent on them, or addicted. Don’t risk your life from one try, and be a good role model to others around you. Don’t get tied up in drugs! Wear your tie dye shirt and socks tomorrow with your uniform bottoms.
