Summer Camps 2020

Join us at Our Lady of Mercy School for Young Women Virtual Summer 2020 Academy. Open to all girls (not just Mercy students) entering grades 6-12 in the fall, workshops are designed to help students grow academically. Each workshops is limited to a maximum enrollment, so sign up as soon as you can (registration coming soon). We adhere to a first-come first-served policy to ensure workshops are filled fairly.

All Workshops run Monday-Friday August 3 through August 14

Each Workshop is $300 for two weeks

Skills Building Workshops
Open to girls in grades 6-8

8 to 9 a.m.

Decimals, fractions, and PEMDAS… oh my! Have fun reviewing and practicing math concepts as we prepare for a fun year at Mercy. Work on building fluency with whole numbers, decimals and fractions. Use math to solve real world problems and fun math puzzles.

8 to 9 a.m.

Make sense of Math 7! Practice, investigate, and enrich your skills in ratios, and number systems through expressions, equations, and inequalities. Apply your practice and investigation to your everyday life.

8 to 9 a.m.

Get ahead in Math 8! Practice, investigate, and enrich your skills in Number System and functions through Expressions, Equations, Inequalities, Probability and Statistics. Apply your practice and investigation to your everyday life.

9 to 10 a.m.

Get ready for English 6 at Mercy! This workshop will focus on developing a readers’ vocabulary and concepts of how meaning is conveyed through reading and writing.

9 to 10 a.m.

Avoid the summer slide and keep your reading and writing skills sharp. Summer regression is real, and the only way to fight it is to keep reading and writing. During this workshop we will use short stories to practice comprehension strategies and identifying literary devices. We will stay current on the world around us by reading articles as a way to increase our non-fiction comprehension. Our writing skills will stay sharp when we respond to formal writing prompts based on the articles.

9 to 10 a.m.

Dive into English 8 and engage in different literacy experiences! This workshop will focus on a deeper understanding of how meaning is conveyed through reading and writing. Engage in texts that may include nonfiction, drama, poetry, fiction, myths, and graphic novels. Bring your creativity to this summer experience.

Course Review Workshops
Open to girls in grade 9

8 to 9 a.m.

This workshop will focus on the content of Algebra 1 typically covered over the last 4 months of the school year. The content will include an overview of polynomial equations and factoring, graphing quadratic functions, solving quadratic equations, solving square root equations, and rational equations and functions.

10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

World Languages summer review workshop will reinforce basic grammatical structures and common vocabulary terms by integrating students in the four areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing that will be essential for success upon entering the next level of language study.

Enrichment Workshops
Open to girls in grades 6-12

Session 1

10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

This workshop is focused on building self confidence, public speaking skills, empathy, and conflict resolution by participating in a variety of acting related games, scene readings, and script writing exercises. The workshop is designed for all abilities levels and no previous acting experience is required.

10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Virtual Voice Class with Mrs. Gizzi will guide students in grades 6-12 on an exciting vocal journey to build a stronger, clearer voice! Mrs. Gizzi will provide students with the tools to learn and perform songs in both classical and musical theater styles with emphasis on healthy vocal production, vocal technique, and effective communication of the song text. This class will utilize Google Meet to allow for effective teacher/student collaboration and immediate feedback. No prior singing experience is necessary. Mrs. Gizzi can’t wait to share her love of all things singing with you!

10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

This seminar is a continuation of the 9th grade Leadership Seminar course during the school year. The class design is engaging and inspirational and incorporates forward-thinking, real life application, with engaging and purposeful value driven outcomes. This seminar will help you to continue to strengthen your identity and connect your faith to enhance your leadership skills.

Session 2

11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Participants will explore experimental digital photography techniques. Taking inspiration from today’s leading digital artists and photographers, campers will create an original work of art combining landscape photography, drawing, painting, and digital photomontage techniques. Personal cameras are required.

11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Philosophy asks and attempts to answer fundamental questions, such as: What can I know? Do I have free will? What is my purpose? We will explore some of these questions and consider answers philosophers have offered. Textbook Required: The Story of Philosophy, by Bryan Magee

All fees are per session. Checks may be made payable to Our Lady of Mercy and sent to:

Cancellation Policy
Insufficient enrollment may result in the cancellation of certain programs. You will be notified at least one week prior to the starting date if a program has been cancelled. Full program fees will be refunded.

Refunds
A refund will be given if withdrawal from the program is made at least two weeks prior to the starting date. Request for refunds will not be honored if withdrawal is made within two weeks of starting date, unless medical reasons are submitted in writing from the child’s physician. A $20 processing fee may be retained for all withdrawal refunds.
