Volunteering at Mercy

Volunteers at Our Lady of Mercy School for Young Women complement and extend the activities and mission of the entire school. Working together with faculty and staff, volunteers perform specific duties and functions to increase the effectiveness of Mercy’s academic, enrollment, and development initiatives.

Volunteer time is considered a valuable resource; we pledge to consistently work to respect every volunteer’s contribution. All volunteers can be assured their efforts make a difference!

Our Lady of Mercy School for Young Women’s Volunteer Program is designed to meet the needs and interests of both the volunteer and the school. It receives full endorsement from administration, faculty, staff, and the Board of Trustees. Our volunteers are recognized as part of the team, working to meet the goals and mission of the school.

Prior to volunteering at Mercy, all volunteers must fill out the Volunteer Form. All volunteers must complete Recognizing and Preventing Child Abuse Training through the Diocese, as well as completing the NYS Sexual Harassment Training. In some cases, a background check will be required. A Mercy representative will be in touch with the requirements needed.

Mercy Parents Association

The Our Lady of Mercy Parents Association inspires a united, faith-filled community where families and educators actively engage by attending events, collaborating, volunteering and sharing talents. Parents Association seeks to enrich every student’s academic and spiritual journey and empower success well beyond high school.

We create a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere for our families to connect; We are supportive and strive to enhance each student’s academic experience, and we express our appreciation and gratitude to our faculty and staff.

We welcome your active participation in any way you are able. Our monthly meetings consist of reports from the Principal, committee reports on upcoming events, and topical participation from other administrators and faculty members. Agenda topics can be suggested by parents and faculty for additions to future meetings.

Ways to Get Involved!

  • Spirit Day Help the Parents Association provide and serve pizza lunch on the last day of Spirit Week (September).

  • Open House Help welcome prospective students and parents. Help lead tours (with student volunteers) and share a parent’s perspective of the value of a Mercy education (October).

  • Faculty and Staff Appreciation Luncheon Provide a luncheon for Mercy’s staff during their annual retreat day. Parents provide food and/or help serve during this celebration of our staff (March).

Assist committee members as they work with the staff to select award recipients based on an application process (April/May).

  • Senior Class/Parent Breakfast Help us celebrate Mercy’s senior class and their parents. Volunteers are needed to plan, prepare, set up, and serve breakfast. This event is held the morning of the Class Bash (June).

  • Various Middle School Events Assist in planning and executing events specifically for the Middle School (various dates).

Mercy Service

The Mercy Service program is grounded in the tradition of service inspired by Catherine McAuley, fostering a spirit of compassion and social responsibility in our students. Through a variety of service opportunities, students engage with and support the needs of the Rochester community, while also participating in weeklong service trips both nationally and internationally.

Although Mercy Service is voluntary and not a graduation requirement, it offers students valuable experiences that develop leadership, empathy, and a commitment to helping others. Mercy Girls volunteer at places where they tutor children and support after-school programs, lend their time and skills to activities like organizing community events, preparing meals for families, and offering their help at local shelters.

By participating in the Mercy Service program, students gain meaningful experiences that allow them to make a tangible difference in the lives of others. These service opportunities help develop leadership skills, foster empathy, and inspire a deep sense of social responsibility, empowering students to create lasting positive change in their communities and beyond.
