Becoming the Mercy Monarchs
In 1980 Mercy athletics was in search of a nickname. Up to that time, our school, like many, did not have a name for its athletic teams. Students were invited to submit recommendations for a nickname to conduct a vote of the entire student body.
At that time, Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia had the #1 women’s basketball team in the country. Led by stars Nancy Lieberman and Anne Donavan, ODU won the national championship in 1979 and would go on to win again in 1980. Their nickname was the “Lady Monarchs.” It was a name that appealed to our students and it received the highest number of votes in our poll.

Since 1980 we have been the Mercy Monarchs. We dropped the “Lady” from the ODU nickname we are simply the “Monarchs.” Not to be confused with the monarch butterfly, we are the Monarchs because we are powerful, loyal, and understand the dynamism of teamwork.

The lion and crown became our symbols and we have won many sectional titles, as well as team and individual state championships, since.
