Our Catholic Identity

Our Lady of Mercy School for Young Women is a sponsored ministry of the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, and as such, we are committed to the spiritual development of our students and the entire Mercy community.

As a Catholic school, Mercy introduces all of our students to the liturgical traditions of Catholic Christianity focusing on our common values of humanity, integrity, and compassion.
Students of all faith backgrounds, beliefs, and traditions are welcomed and embraced at Mercy.
Worshipping alongside people of many faiths gives students exposure to other cultures and beliefs. At Mercy, you will build deep and long-lasting friendships through daily life in a community that fosters trust and mutual respect. A culture of open dialogue— where different perspectives are valued and encouraged— will allow you to develop skills of civil discourse.

Our Catholic identity is a vital complement to a broad-based liberal arts foundation to developing a worldview that nurtures your potential to be a leader for good in the world.

In addition to daily immersion in a faith community that promotes love of God and of neighbor, our students participate in liturgical services, retreats, Christian service, and receive instruction in theology.

Campus Ministry

Mercy’s Campus Ministry program anchors us in our identity as a Catholic institution founded by the Sisters of Mercy and enlivens us to joyfully embrace and live our faith.

List of 8 items.

  • Eucharistic Liturgies

Eucharistic liturgies are celebrated throughout the year on holy days of obligation and for sacred Mercy traditions such as Mercy Day, Golden Mass, May Day, and Rose Mass.

In addition to rooting us in our Catholic identity, Masses also enable students to demonstrate spiritual leadership and be role models for their peers by serving as lectors, cantors, and altar servers.
  • Prayerful Community

Prayerful community is nourished through daily prayer each morning over the announcements, prayer to begin each class, and prayer services for various significant occasions. Many of these prayers are student-led ensuring that they are authentic and relevant for our community of faith.
  • Student Engagement

Student engagement is a key component of the Campus Ministry program. Middle school students are invited to participate in monthly CMC (Campus Ministry Community) gatherings to share and grow their faith. High school students are able to join CMB (Campus Ministry Board).

CMB members cultivate their own spiritual growth through an annual retreat and monthly faith sharing small groups. They act as liturgical ministers during school Masses, assist with morning prayer, and lead Campus Ministry projects such as Christmas Baskets and Mission Month fundraisers.
  • Retreats

Retreats are held annually. All students participate in their grade level retreat on a designated school day. Seniors enjoy an off-campus overnight class retreat in the Spring. Taking this time away from normal academic routines enables students to deepen their relationships with God and one another.
  • Ministry Days

Ministry Days are a key component of our middle school program. Three times each year, 6th - 8th grade students spend a morning being of service at a local organization and reflecting on the significance of that experience of faith in action. These days strive to give our students a heart for service that will last long beyond their time at Mercy.
  • Our Mercy Identity

Our Mercy Identity is honored and strengthened especially through our attention to the Critical Concerns of the Sisters of Mercy. Each March we strive to educate and inspire our students during Critical Concerns Week when they engage in prayer, workshops, and activities to deepen the understanding of and commitment to the issues of Earth, Women, Nonviolence, Racism, and Immigration.
  • Faculty & Staff Faith Formation

Faculty & staff faith formation begins at the start of each school year with a mini-retreat focusing on the school year theme and continues with an annual full-day retreat to enrich our spirituality and build a faith-filled community of colleagues committed to the mission of Mercy.
  • Pastoral Care

Pastoral care is offered to students and staff who are facing illness, loss, or other significant challenges. The director of campus ministry welcomes prayer requests and is available as a supportive presence.

Mercy Service

The Mercy Service program is grounded in the tradition of service inspired by Catherine McAuley, fostering a spirit of compassion and social responsibility in our students. Through a variety of service opportunities, students engage with and support the needs of the Rochester community, while also participating in weeklong service trips both nationally and internationally.

Although Mercy Service is voluntary and not a graduation requirement, it offers students valuable experiences that develop leadership, empathy, and a commitment to helping others. Mercy Girls volunteer at places where they tutor children and support after-school programs, lend their time and skills to activities like organizing community events, preparing meals for families, and offering their help at local shelters.

By participating in the Mercy Service program, students gain meaningful experiences that allow them to make a tangible difference in the lives of others. These service opportunities help develop leadership skills, foster empathy, and inspire a deep sense of social responsibility, empowering students to create lasting positive change in their communities and beyond.
